I’m terrified.
I’m more frightened than I’ve ever been in my life, more than I ever thought was possible. More scared than I was before I graduated college, so afraid of failing at adult life that I considered suicide and extreme self-mutilation. More scared than I was in my…
I disagree with everything here.
I’m fine with ‘forcing’ medical procedures on kids. Otherwise I’d be dead. Simple as that. While you can argue all you like about how it alters their personality…they’re toddlers. They don’t have a fully developed personality yet. The illness does not define the person. But it stops it early on so that they can develop, in other ways, which will all in all benefit them. These children are not going to look back and be like “Oh, yeah, I remember being autistic I really wish my parents didn’t do that to me.”
As for teens and adults with autism, they will not force it. If you are fine with it, awesome. Live with it. But there are PLENTY who are not fine with it, and they should have the option, simple as that.
And no, this is not ‘genocide.’ This is akin to saying that having a cure for asthma, or depression, or bipolar disorder, or being paralyzed, or AIDS is genocide. But it’s not. It’s offering a choice for those who are capable to choose (be they the individual or parent’s of the individual if they’re a child) to not have to deal with it or suffer from it or watch their child grow up with it.
As someone with both Aspergers and depression, FUCK THAT COMPARISON, okay? A mental ILLNESS is something that should be cured, because it’s something that’s wrong. A learning disability is something that’s a PART of you, so you don’t cure it, you MANAGE it, because the way your brain is set up clashes with the way most of the world is set up but that doesn’t mean the way your brain is set up is WRONG.
Guess what, I also had to undergo medical procedures to save my life when I was a few days old. ALSO NOT A VALID COMPARISON.
I don’t want to be rude but if you’re not on the spectrum, you really need to sit down here.
Jegus cod this is infuriating. I don’t necessarily agree with all of the OP’s language but they were coming from a place of well-justified rage.
